More on Methamphetamine "P" - 1st Mar 2017

More and more methamphetamine contamination to rental properties being reported:  The Auckland Herald recently ran a story about a landlord who’s house was trashed and left contaminated by methamphetamine (meth, ‘P’ etc.).  The owner of the property expects that putting the damage right could cost as much as $140,000.  The tenants in the property came with good references but the owner managed it himself. We can’t say it enough…”make sure that your insurance covers this sort of damage/contamination, and while you are ate it check your excess – the lower your excess the better”.

It’s only a matter of time before we come across a meth contaminated rental property.  Touch wood – so far so good.  We provided constructive and detailed feedback to the NZ Property Investors Association who collated submissions to Standards NZ in relation to testing and rectifying ‘P’ contaminated properties.  We believe (and hope) that with only some very minor changes the meth screening processes we are already using to help protect our owners properties will be adopted.
